JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Independent Living Advocate (Branch Office) (Non-exempt)

DEFINITION: Responsible for providing direct and indirect services to assist persons with disabilities achieve maximum independence.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Executive Director

RESPONSIBILITIES:

To assist persons with disabilities secure permanent housing, as well as emergency shelter as needed.

To assist persons with disabilities access the available public benefits (i.e. Social Security disability Insurance, SSI, Medi-Cal, General Assistance, etc.), including assistance with the application process, reconsiderations, and administrative hearings.

To assist persons with disabilities with issues and complaints related the Fair Housing Act, Americas with Disabilities Act, and the Rehabilitation Act.

To assist persons with disabilities with Independent Living Skills training, peer support and access to support groups and other resources.

To conduct outreach and educational activities to ensure those persons with disabilities and others are informed of CRI’s services and mission.

To network with local agencies and organizations to ensure comprehensive referral options.

To engage in systems advocacy activities on behalf of person with disabilities.

To complete all required forms, records and reports in an accurate and timely manner.

To provide I & R and technical assistance to individuals requesting assistance regarding adaptive equipment and assistive technology issues.

To Participate in the agency’s involvement and collaboration with the Statewide AT Network.

To participate in local, state and national strategies and techniques to develop and implement systems changes and outcomes affecting individuals with disabilities’ civil rights and participation in their community.

To participate in the agency’s on-going Systems Change Plan development and activities.

To complete other related duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:

Knowledge of and sensitivity toward persons with disabilities.
Knowledge of the values and concepts of the Independent Living Movement.
Knowledge of resources and services available to persons with disibilites.
Knowledge of word processing and data base(s).
Ability to quickly learn, understand, and explain laws and regulations affecting persons with disabilities.
Ability to communicate with angry, upset or demanding consumers.
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions.
Ability to think clearly in emergencies, complete work with deadlines, and work with frequent interruptions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Personal experience with disability.
Experience as a disability rights advocate.
Bi-lingual in Spanish or American sign Language.
BA in human services or equivalent experience.
